Fear

1 John 4:18 talks about fear. This fear has to do with "punishment" or the coming judgment on the world. Fear is "dread, terror, state of severe distress, concern for impending pain, danger or evil." As we talk about fear in this context, it is important to remember that John is telling his readers that we do not have to fear the coming judgment. Believers have been redeemed and because of God's perfect love, we do not need to be afraid of God's wrath on the unsaved. Praise the Lord! Believers can be fearful of judgment or punishment of sin, but we can remember that God is faithful and will forgive (1 Jn. 1:9). Because of his perfect love, He has forigven us completely and will not hold us accountable for our sins. However, this does NOT mean that we won't suffer present physical consequences - say, a speeding ticket for driving over the speed limit. There are consequences for our sin, but God does not hold us eternally accountable for them as through Christ, they have been forgiven. Some Christians fear death....this ought not to be. For we know that if we are absent from our body, we are present with the Lord.

1 John 4:15-21

We begin today digging into chapter 4:15-21 today. We chose to skip verses 15 and 16, only because we have discussed these verses in the past with other sections of our study. They are much a repeat of what John has already said, so to move on with our study, we are going to skip right ahead to verses 17 & 18. Over the next several days we are asking ourselves how these 2 verses fit together. We want to gain a proper understanding and so we hope you'll join us as we discuss the importance of these verses!

1 John - a Review

We are going to take the next couple of days to review what we have studied so far in 1 John. We have been studying intensely the last several weeks and so we thought it would be helpful to take a step back and look at the book of 1 John again as a whole. If you are following our online outline, we start today with question #1 of chapter 4, verses 15-21. What has been the emphasis in John's communications so far? Main ideas of chapters 1-4: Chapter 1) Jesus is a real man whom we have fellowship, 2) Those who claim to know Him must love the brothers, 3) God's children must not live in sin, 4) Learn to discern the spirit of truth and falsehood.

A short break in our study....

We'd like to take a short break in our 1 John study today to just talk about how we are currently studying God's Word. You know, studying God's Word is just so important. Getting to know God better helps us as we seek to glorify Him. Our program seeks to study God's Word and then apply it to women in various seasons of life. Whether you are a teenage girl still learning about all the truths God wants you to know or are a mature older woman, there is much to share! Personal application

How can you personally apply 1 John 4:13-14 to your life? We will be sharing our testimony concerning these verses in the next two days and would love to hear from you! We start off by talking about the work of the Holy Spirit. Check our online notes for the specific things we mention.

Testifying

We've been talking the last several days about how John testified the fact that God the Father sent God the Son to be the Savior of the world. As believer's we are also to testify of this fact. The question we are asking today is, "How can we as believers testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world"? We shared our thoughts on this matter....please share how you testify.

Home

"What is your home communicating? What message does it send out about what God is like? Does it manifest His love, His grace, His beauty, and His order? Does it point people to the gospel? Does it help them see their need for a Savior and make them thirsty for Christ?...we can make homes out of wherever God has placed us, that minister grace and the gospel and the likeness of Christ to those around us...That climate is affected by our attitudes, by the activities that take place in our homes and by the general atmosphere of our homes. A climate conducive to nurturing life would be a climate of order, peace, grace, unconditional love, kindness, truth, a home where we experience the reality and the presence of Christ. Where we talk about Christ. Where we talk about His Word...What stifles life? What kills life in our homes? It’s a climate of:

• criticism
• perfectionism
• anger
• selfishness
• pride
• contention,
• performance-based love

If that kind of climate is in your home, ask yourself, how am I contributing to that environment? Am I doing something to make the climate of our home that way with my behavior, my spirit, my actions, or my reactions?"

I read this in one of Nancy Leigh DeMoss' radio programs, and I thought it was such a great reminder. No matter where we are in life, what season or the size of our home, we are called to be hospitable to others, not only sharing food but also sharing Christ!

I Peter 4:9-10

Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace. (ESV)

Getting practical - The difficulty to love

What makes it difficult for you to love others? The next 2 days we will seek to answer this question very practically. Do you struggle to love others because of pride? Selfishness? Do you see the response of "I need ME time" as selfish? God calls us to love others and that takes sacrifice; it takes giving up something we want for the good of another. What excuses do you give to NOT show love? Evaluate those excuses and determine if you have a biblical reason for withholding love. If you do not, take time to repent and ask God to help you practice love in a biblical way. We know this is hard work, yet it honors our Savior and is so worth it!

"One anothers" in the Bible

Today we talk about question #7 on our outline - "What is the result of loving one another?" Today and tomorrow we'll talk about other "one another's" in Scripture. See the online notes for the verses. Then on Monday, October 11th, we'll answer question #7 in more detail. What are your thoughts?

I just read this quote on an email this morning sent out by Nancy Leigh DeMoss speaking about the importance of our modesty as women:

"Richard Baxter was a 17th century pastor who realized how a woman's clothing could snare a man's mind. He gave women this counsel: "You must walk among sinful persons as you would do with a candle among straw or gunpowder.""

Are we being that cautious in our lives in order to guard the hearts of men around us?

But why love?

Why should Christians love one another? Besides the clear fact that it is a command in Scripture, what other points can we make regarding the importance of love? We will spend September 16th talking about other "oughts" in Scripture. These can be found on our study notes for chapter 4. From then we'll seek to answer this question....what are your thoughts?

What is love?

The next 4 days we will be answering the question, "What is love?". We are going to take quite a bit of time giving as many examples from Scripture of what love looks like. Buckle up and join us as we talk about how to give flesh to the word love! Then share any additional thoughts that you may have here! The study notes also have a listing of verses we share. Check out the notes for chapter 4, question 4 on this section of Scripture.

God's Love

How did God show His love? From 1 John 4:9 we see that God showed His love because He sent His only Son to take the punishment for our sins. Because of this gift, we can "live through Him." What a blessing to know that God loved us this way! We see the Jesus Christ died that we might live "through Him" (1 Jn. 4:9), "for Him" (2 Cor. 5:15) and "with Him" (1 Thess. 5:9-10). We hope today and tomorrow will be an encouragement to you as you reflect on God's love for you. A challenge: take this love and share it with someone who needs to know God's love.

Worldly vs. Godly

Today we ask the question, "What are the differences between the world's idea of love and God's love?" We will spend a few sessions talking about these differences and want to help you think through some of the ways that people think about love. We also want to help you evaluate your own love life. Are you loving others with a godly love or with a false, worldly love? Think through the "why" of why you show love to others. Does it point others Christ? Is your motivation pure? Is it a godly love?

Loving and Knowing God

As we move into our study of 1 John 4:7-12, we find that we will be doing a lot of talking about love! Some of what we say will be a repeat of what we've shared before about love. But it's so important to grasp and understand, so we hope you will welcome the reminders! What is the relationship between loving and knowing God? Overcoming the world

Overcoming the world....seems like such a difficult thing some days. Yet God has promised that we can overcome the world. We do not have to live under control of it's false philosophies. Rather, we can live a life that is glorifying to Him by the power of the Holy Spirit. Today we will begin talking about what ways we have overcome the world. We'll give some personal examples as well as try to help you see the confidence you can have to overcome the devil through Christ.

Distinguishing Truth from Error

Today we ask the question, "How can we distinguish truth from error in spiritual matters?" from 1 John 4:2-3. As a Christian living in this world, we must be able to know what is truth and what is false in order to live a God-honoring life. How do I know what is right and wrong? Over the next 3 sessions, we will seek to answer this question and give practical ideas on how to know the truth. A few things we will mention: 1) Find out what God's Word says, 2) Seek wise counsel, 3) Ask God for wisdom. As you listen and study along with us, what are your thoughts? How do YOU find out what is truth and what is error? Please share!

1 John 4 - An overview

As we begin our study now in chapter 4 of 1 John, we give a brief overview of the first section of verses 1-6. As we study this section of Scripture, keep in mind that the word "spirit" refers to ideas and philosophies of the false prophets that we in the midst of this church. The believers in this church we being bombarded by these false teachings. Therefore, John gave instruction to test the spirits to know whether the teaching was from God or not. So we also ask, how we are to test the spirits. The primary means of knowing whether a teaching comes from God depends on whether or not one believes in the diety of Christ. Many religions today believe that Christ was a real person, but deny His deity. We ought to recognize this teaching as false and hold fast to what we know is true.

Do others know Jesus because of me?

We're asking ourselves the question today, How do other people know that God lives in you? We will talk about a few simple things as we wrap up chapter 3. As you evaluate your life - are you a testimony to Christ? Do others know Jesus because of you?

Prayer, cont...

Verse 23 of 1 John 3 gives us two commands - things we KNOW God wants from us. These commands are to believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, and love others just as we've be instructed before. So the question we are asking about this verse is this: How should the truth affect your prayer life? We will be sharing our thoughts on this over the next couple of days. Please share yours!

Prayer

1 John 3:20-21 lay the foundation for verse 22, " and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him." In the context of this passage, we are talking about loving others in deed. John lays the negative example of Cain and then gives us the positive example of love - Christ! As we fulfill this command to love as Christ loves, it leads us into the discussion of prayer and asking things of God. We can have confidence that we are obeying God's commands and are in a right relationship with God and others that God will hear our requests and answer them! We are seeking the Will of God, so whether the answered prayer returns in our favor or not, we know that God is in control and have peace in that. It's such a blessing to have peace and it's possible, when we are walking according to God's will. We will be spending several days on verse 22, join in the discussion by sharing your thoughts here. God knows the Heart

God knows our heart and there are many verses that prove these. We shared two examples of this from Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42) and Peter (John 21:17). What a comfort to know that even though our hearts can be deceived, God knows our heart fully. Here are some verses we read today....look them up and read the truth that God knows all things. Let this truth be an encouragement to you. Over the next several days, we will be talking about this truth. 1)1 Chronicles 28:9, 2) Jeremiah 17:10, 3) Luke 16:14-15, 4) Acts 1:24, 5) Romans 8:26-27, 6) 1 Corinthians 4:3-4.

A Condemning Heart

1 John 3:20 is a tough one to wrap our minds around! We hope that we can help make this verse clear and we pray that through our discussion on this that we can help you understand more of what the Scriptures say regarding "guilty" feelings. This verse says, "for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything." What does John mean when he talks about this condemning heart? This condemning heart is is NOT a conviction of the Holy Spirit. It is rather a "feeling" that our sinful self gives to us when we might feel guilty about a situation in which we need not feel guilt. It might be that you feel guilty about something that God does not condemn - say missing a morning of devotions for example. The point is that our hearts are deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9) and this verse tells us that God is greater than our hearts. I need not feel guilty if I know in Scripture that God does not condemn me. So in our example of missing devotions, is it a sin that I didn't get up to have my quiet time with God in the morning - No! Rather, I need to understand the importance of having quiet time. I should then seek to have quiet time with God at another point in the day. This is especially an important principle for new moms. I can relate - I have a baby in the home and I know how hard it is to just sit and read God's Word and pray at times. So what we need to do is take advantage of the time we have and spend time with God when there is opportunity and making sure you are using your time wisely. Meditate on His Word through the day, singing songs of praise to Him as you are even washing dishes! Do not condemn yourself that you can't study for 30 minutes a day - that is not what matters to God. There are many other life circumstances where this can apply, this is just one example. What do we know?

As we move on in our study of 1 John, we come to the section of chapter 3 verses 19-24. In the book of John there are many instances where John says "we know" or "you know." We list for you today the 4 instances from 3:15-24. They are 1) vs. 15 - we know that no one who hates has eternal life, 2) vs. 16 - we know what love is, 3) vs. 19 - we know we are of the truth, 4) vs. 24 - we know that He abides in us by the proof of the Holy Spirit. These truths that we are to "know" ought to reassure us as vs. 19 tells us. When doubts arise, we can go back to the things we know to be true and have peace and confidence because of God's truth. When in doubt to you go to the Truth or do you seek advice and counsel from someone that doesn't know the Truth?

Fleshing out Love

1 John 3:18 tells believers that love is not just in word or talk but it is proven in deed and in truth. We are talking about this verse and trying to understand what this means. How do we love in deed and in truth? Love is more than just talk - it's love in action. Be genuine in your actions too...don't just go through the motions because God knows your heart! When was there a time where you might have loved in "word" and have missed out on God's blessing of loving in "action"? Evaluate your love life towards others - are you loving in "action" or just in "talk"?

Called to Help

When we "see our brother in need" (1 John 3:17), how might we close our heart against him or her? To our shame, we do often close the door of opportunity and blessing to meet another's need. Do you have any personal examples of how you might have done this? How did God use that situation to help you grow?

Called to Love

1 John 3:16 reveals that as Christians, we are to love others and even lay down our own life for our brothers. How can that be done? What does this look like in the life of the believer? Does God really want us to suffer for the good of another? As we look into Scripture we see the command to think of others before ourselves, yet when someone has a need, we are tempted to give an excuse as to why we cannot help. True love is shown when we show it by our actions. Consider James 2:15-17. How can you fulfill that today?

Let's Talk About Love

What is love? 1 John 3:16 tells us we can KNOW love. Christ died for us! We know love by God and God alone. The love that we show others, proves our love for God. We'll be talking the next several days about love, it's characteristics, as well as share some personal examples of what love "fleshed out" has looked like in our lives

Hatred = Murder

1 John 3:15 tells me that if I hate my brother, I am a murderer. Wow! Have you ever hated someone? Cain hated his brother and his hatred let him to kill his brother. You might think that you would never be capable of doing something so severe, but the Bible tells us that if we hate someone it is just like murder in God's eyes. Is there a relationship you need to reconcile? If so, pray that God would give you opportunity and grace to reconcile that relationship. Ask Him to help you confess any wrongs you have done toward the other person that Christ may be glorified! Don't let hatred boil in your heart.

Do Not Be Surprised!

Do you love surprises? I do...when they are for special celebrations or just because. But I hate being surprised by a scary noise in the dark! Well, we have a warning here in 1 John 3:13 - it says, "Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you." Why would the world hate you? Should the world hate you? What should your reaction be to their hate?

A Bad Example

1 John 3:12 tells us that we should not be like Cain. We will spend the next couple of days studying the story of Cain from Genesis 4:1-16. Cain's attitude and behavior are bad examples to follow. Is your life full of selfishness, anger, depression and rejection of biblical counsel? Be warned! Cain had these same attitudes and he murdered!

The Message to Love

Over the next two weeks, we will be talking about 1 John 3:4-11. John begins this section with a reminder about loving others. Don't we all need reminders? John does this for our benefit so that we would not forget to love others. The command to love others was given from the beginning of our faith in Christ. I can't get over the power of Romans 5:5, "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit," and 1 Thessalonians 4:9 that says, "you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another." If God has poured love into our hearts and we ought to love others - then we have no excuse to not share God's love to others. People need to see the love of God - especially unbelievers! Are you sharing God's love? What evidence is there in your life that you are?

Questions for Thought

As we conclude this section of 1 John 3:4-10, ask yourself the following questions to evaluate your life: 1.Do I have the divine nature within me or am I merely pretending to be a Christian? 2.Do I cultivate this divine nature by daily Bible reading and prayer? 3.Has any unconfessed sin defiled my inner self? 4.Am I willing to confess and forsake it? 5.Do I allow my flesh to control my thoughts and desires, or does the divine nature rule me? 6.When temptation comes, do I “play with it” or do I flee from it? Do I immediately yield to the divine nature within me?

The Children of God

How do we identify the children of God. Well, 1 John 3:10 tells us! It says, " By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother." Over the next few days, we will talk about verse 10 and it's implications.

Sin in the beliver's life

Sin - ugh.... The thought of sin in my life torments me. I grapple with the question of why do I continue to sin? Do you? As a believer, we still have that ugly sin nature a part of us, but the Bible tells us that we have been given a new nature to follow righteousness. 1 John 3:9 tells us that we cannot keep on sinning because we have been born of God. How is that true? The next couple of days we will be talking about this verse. But here are some reasons we give as to why Christians cannot continue to sin: 1. Sin is incompatible with the law of God which believers love (Psalm 119:97, Romans 7:22). 2. Sin is incompatible with the work of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). 3. Christ came to destroy the works of Satan (1 John 3:8). 4. Sin is incompatible with the ministry of the Holy Spirit who has imparted a new nature into the believer (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The Devil

1 John 3:8 helps us understand the devil and gives us HOPE as we seek to follow Christ rather than Satan. Christ came to destroy the works of the devil and in that truth believers can have HOPE! We do not have to live in bondage to sin. Our question for verse 8 is: What do you learn about the devil and how does that help you in your spiritual battles? We would love to hear how God has helped you overcome the devil in your quest for spiritual growth and Christlikeness.

The Victory Plan

Today we begin discussing The Victory Plan as we seek to do what is right. Listed here are the points that we will cover over the next several days. These points can also be found on the study notes. 1. Meaningful devotions (James 1:22-25) 2. Faithful involvement in a good local church (Hebrews 10:24) 3. Develop Godly friendships (2 Timothy 2:22) 4. Institute Accountability (Hebrews 3:13, 14; Romans 12:10, 16) 5. Proper diet, rest and exercise (1 Timothy 4:8, 1 Corinthians 10:31, Ecclesiastes 5:12) Book suggestion: Love to Eat Hate to Eat by Elyse Fitzpatrick 6. Commit to serve others (Matthew 20:25-28) 7. Use your time wisely (Ephesians 5:15-16) 8. Avoid certain people, places and practices (1 Corinthians 15:44, Psalm 1:1, 1 Corinthians 10:12).

What does it mean to do right?

1 John 3:7 says"Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous." So what does it mean to do right? We will spend the next couple of weeks answering this question. We will also introduce you to the "Victory Plan." Please share any thoughts you have.

Am I different?

In our study of 1 John 3:6, we are asking ourselves this question: How is a person who lives like Christ unusual?" Over the next 5 days we will be answering this question. As a Christian, are YOU different? In what ways can unbelievers see the difference in you? We hope you will study along with us!

What is lawlessness?

Over the next several days, we will be discussing lawlessness. This word, "lawlessness," used in 1 John 3:4 is not a word we often use, yet Scripture uses it to be clear that it is an intentional rebellion against God's will. Lawlessness does refer to sin, but the meaning behind the word is so much more - it truly gives the idea of one's choice to rebel against God's plan. Through this word study, the ladies will be answering the question "What is lawlessness?" The answers they give with Scripture text are listed on the online study notes. How has this study helped you to understand lawlessness?

Sanctification

In the study of 1 John 3:3, the ladies talked today about sanctification. What is God's part in our sanctification and what is our part? God's Part 1. He eliminated the authority of the flesh in the life of believers. Romans 6:6-14 2. God illuminates the Word of God in the mind of believers. 1 Corinthians 2:12 3. God instills the fruit of the Spirit in the life of believers. Galatians 5:22-23 Our Part 1. We need to mortify the flesh. Romans 8:13 2. We need to mediate on God's Word. Psalm 19:14 3. We need to manifest Christ's likeness. Ephesians 5:1 What is the hardest part in sanctification for you? What struggles do you have? How might you overcome these difficulties?

Questions for Reflection

As the ladies reflect today on 1 John 3:2, they asked these questions. How might you answer them? What verses would you use to guide you in your answer? 1) Why don't I act like the world? 2) Why don't I cheat on my time card when other's won't find out? 3) Why do I strive to treat others better than myself? 4) Why would I get up on Sunday morning when I could sleep in? 5) Why do I give money to the church rather than spending it on myself?

God's Love

As the ladies discuss today 1 John 3:1, we can see that God has given us His love. The best example of His love for us is found in John 3:16 - that He sent His Son to pay the penalty for our sins. He died for YOU because He loves you! How does God's love for you affect you? Have you accepted His love, His salvation? Has there been a difficult circumstance in your life where God's love has been a comfort to you? We pray that you will find comfort in God's love and that if you haven't accepted His free gift of salvation, that you will do so today!

1 John 3:1-3

Today, the ladies begin discussing chapter 3 in 1 John. Study notes are on the right of our blog if you are interested in printing them and following along. The first question in this section is this: What has the Father lavished on us (or given to us) and how does that affect us? (verse 1) Please share your thoughts as we look into the many blessings the Father has given to us. If you'd like to share a personal testimony - that would be an encouragement as well. God's Righteousness

1 John 2:29 tells us that God is righteous. What a comfort know and believe His righteousness! But how do we know that God is righteous? We know in God's Word that He tells us He is righteous. Here are some verses that talk about God's righteousness. 1) Psalm 7:9 - Righteousness is part of God's character. 2) Psalm 71:15 - we cannot comprehend the dept of his righteousness. 3) John 17:25 - Christ acknowledges God's righteousness. Psalm 119:172 - His righteousness is exhibited in His commandments. Do we acknowledge His righteousness? How does God's righteousness affect us in how we see His plan, how we walk, talk and behave?

What the Bible says about Truth

Our discussion today reflects on what the Bible says about Truth. Here is a shorter list of verses that talk about Truth. There is a much lengthier list located on our study notes if you wish. We hope you will find this list helpful in your study. 1. God is a God of Truth (Deut. 32:4; Ps 31:15) 2. Christ is Truth (John 14:6; 7:18) 3. Christ was full of Truth (John 1:14) 4. Identifying the antichrists

To identify the antichrists, know Christ! 1 John 2:22-23 tells us that those who deny the Father and Son are the antichrists. Here are some characteristics of antichrists: (1) Depart from the fellowship (2:18-19), (2) Deny the faith (2:22-23), (3) Deceive the faithful (2:26-29). How do you get to know Christ better? Are you using your biblical glasses to evaluate philosophies and teachings of others to know if what they are teaching is biblical?

We've added some Bible study tools to the right side of our blog. We hope that you'll take a look at these tools to see if they would be helpful for you as you study God's Word. We'll be referencing these tools in upcoming broadcasts and wanted to make them available to you! Happy studying!

Hospitality

The Lord wants us to be hospitable, but it does not always turn out like we might like it to. I think that today was sort of one of those times. We had guests over for Sunday dinner, which is always interesting with Seth being a pastor and us having one car. That means that he is at church for a while after the services, and that I can't go home early to get things going. We also had a meeting after the service, so that put us back a while as well. I generally do a majority of the meal in the crockpot for Sunday dinners (have I ever mentioned that I think that was one of the best inventions ever made?). So, other than being delayed in getting home, everything was going okay until...I was trying to check if the meat was done in the crockpot and the peas boiled over. Then, as we were trying to stop that and get the bread done in the toaster over, I realized that trying to put to many rolls in at one time does not work as I started smelling a very bad smell...smoke. I opened the toaster oven and realized that the rolls were actually on fire! We then had to try to get the rolls out so the fire could be taken care of. Then, because we have our table basically in our kitchen area, I needed to air it out so we could breathe while we ate. I had to open the door to the deck (in Minnesota, in January) to get some fresh air inside. Needless to say, Seth and I ate the very "well-done" rolls. I felt like I had been cooking over a camp fire. But, it was a good afternoon, because we were able to spend time with people from church and they could realize that we are very real people, just like everyone else!!

Anointing by the Holy One

Today we continued in our study of 1 John in chapter 2:20. We asked the question: What is the significance of being anointed by the Holy One? How can we understand this verse? The term “anointing” refers back to the Old Testament when one was anointed with oil to be set apart. As believers we are anointed, set apart. John 6:69 tells us that Jesus is the Holy One who gives this anointing. The anointing is the Holy Spirit as we see in John 1:32-33. This anointing is given at salvation (Ephesians 1:33) and abides in us (1 John 2:27). How exciting that as God’s children, we have the resource we need to discern doctrinal error through the Holy Spirit that abides in us. In the context of 1 John, this was encouraging to the believers in this church as there were many who were turning away from the truth of God’s Word. Join us tomorrow as we continue discussing this verse.

Counterfeit Christians

"Counterfeit Christians." Does that term seem to make sense? 1 John 2:19 tells us that this church had these counterfeit Christians. There were those who were part of the fellowship that once claimed salvation and then left. 2 Timothy 4:1 tells us that in the later times some will depart from the faith. Note this does not state they "lost" their salvation. When we read 1 John 2:19 it says when these counterfeit Christians left it was so that it would be "plain that they all are not of us." Have you experienced this in your church? Have you had professing believers part of your fellowship and then later leave the church to go back to their old lifestyle? It could be that they never truly accepted Christ. This gives you a way to pray for them - that if they are not saved, then the Lord would lead them to salvation. Only God knows the heart and if they are a child of God. You can be confident that those who are truly saved that God can lead them to repentance. Pray for those who have left...

A study in 1 John 2:18

As the ladies dig into verse 18 of chapter 2, they asked today what it means that "many antichrists have come"? They shared how John was referring to those in the church who were false teachers, those who were opponents of Jesus. These false teachers were not accurately reflecting Christ which is why John was writing against them. In personal application - does your life accurately reflect Christ? Do your attitudes, behaviors and words reflect the true nature of Christ? I hope that this has been a challenge to you today as it has been to me.

Introduction of 1 John 2:18-25

As the ladies begin this new section in 1 John 2:18-25, please note that there is much discussion regarding meanings of words in this section. They will be doing their best to practically apply this section to our lives. We pray that you'll enjoy digging in with them in this more difficult passage.

We'd like to ask our listeners for their opinion and thoughts regarding our current Bible study on the book of 1 John. We appreciate those who listen to our program and would love to hear from you. What are the Father's Desires?

As the study continues today in 1 John 2:16, the question is asked - what are the Father's desires? Matthew 22:37-39 tells us to love the Lord. We need to love Him with all our heart and love what He loves. Colossians 1:9-11 tells us that we need to walk worthy and please Him! Are you striving to fulfill the Father's desires or your own? We pray that the study over the next several days will be an encouragement to you as you seek to do the Father's will.

Humility, part 2

Over the last 2 weeks the ladies have discussed the manifestations of humility. Here are the remaining manifestations. Are these present in your life? 3) Focusing on Christ, 4) Biblical praying, 5) Being overwhelmed with God's grace, 6) Being thankful towards others, 7) Being gentle and patient, 8) Seeing yourself as no better than others, 9) Having an accurate view of your gifts, 10) Being a good listener, 11) Talking about others if it is good, 12) Being submissive to those in authority, 13) Preferring others over yourself, 14) Being thankful for criticism or reproof, 15) Having a teachable spirit, 16) Seeking ways to build up others, 17) Serving, 18) Quickness to admit when you are wrong, 19) Quickness in granting and asking for forgiveness, 20) Repenting of sin as a way of life, 21) Minimizing other's sins or shortcomings in comparison to your own, 22) Being genuinely glad for others, 23) Being honest about your spiritual growth, 24) Possessing close relationships.

Humility

Today the ladies continued on in our study of "pride in possessions" from 1 John 2:16 by introducing the "put on" of humility as the opposite of pride. The manifestations are taken from the book From Pride to Humility by Stuart Scott. 1) Recognizing and trusting God's character, 2) Seeing yourself as having no right to question an Almighty and Perfect God. As the ladies continue with this study over the next several days, we pray that you will ask God to help you cultivate these manifestations of humility in your life.

Pride, part 4

We welcomed Crystal to the program today and finished up the study of pride and it's manifestations. 26) Being jealous or envious, 27) Using others, 28) Being deceitful by covering up sins, 29) Using attention-getting tactics, 30) Not having close relationships. We pray that you have prayerfully asked the Lord to reveal to you any of these prideful manifestations that might be present in your life. Next time, the ladies will begin discussing the opposite of pride - humility.

Pride, part 3

Here are additional manifestations of pride that have been discussed in the last week and today: 7) perfectionism, 8) talking too much, 9) talking too much about yourself, 10) seeking independence or control, 11) being consumed with what others think, 12) being devastated by criticism, 13)being unteachable, 14) being sarcastic, 15) a lack of service, 16) a lack of compassion, 17) being defensive, 18) not admitting when you are wrong, 19) not asking for forgiveness, 20), a lack of biblical prayer, 21) resisting authority, 22) voicing opinions when not asked, 23) minimizing your own sin, 24) maximizing others' sin and 25) being impatient or irritable with others. Are there any on this list that are in your life? What have you done to change?

Pride, part 2

The ladies continued their discussion today on the topic of pride. As they discuss pride and humility over the next several weeks, they will be using the book From Pride to Humility by Stuart Scott as a guide in the discussion. They will be sharing some manifestations of pride. Here are some: 1) Complaining against God, 2) A lack of gratitude, 3) Anger 4) Seeing yourself better than others, 5) Having an inflated view of your importance, 6) Being focused on the lack of your gifts. Each day over the next several days, they will share more manifestations of pride and verses giving examples of each. We hope that as you listen you will prayerfully consider if any of these prideful manifestations are a part of your life. If you find they are, please remember that God desires for you to repent and turn away from your sin.

Pride

Over the next two weeks, Pam, Rebecca and Karen will be digging into verse 16, "pride in possessions." The ladies will be sharing a lot of verses. These verses are all listed on our online study notes, which can be found on the right side of our blog. Please use this study guide as you listen to help you follow along. Pride - a strong word to describe our desires and what we depend on. What we are proud about can be an idol. Am I a slave to my stuff? This is a good question to ponder as we begin thinking about if we have pride in our life. Please pray that God will reveal any area(s) in your life where you have pride in your possessions. Ask that God would help you to recognize these areas and then take the proper steps to repent and seek God's forgiveness.

A Personal Note

I just wanted to take this time to let our listeners know that I will be temporarily taking a break from this program. At the time of the recording of today's broadcast, I was put on bed rest due to the arrival of our 5th child. I had begun having pre-term labor and signs that I might deliver our little one early. Since this recording, our daughter was born 5 weeks pre-mature on October 1st and spent some time in the hospital after her birth. We are now home and our daughter is doing just fine. I will be taking a break from the program to care for our new baby and family. I am not sure how long I will be gone, but in the meantime you will hear some other women on the daily program who will help continue our study through 1 John. Outward Beauty, continued....

Over the last couple of days we shared many verses regarding beauty. If you missed the program or would like the verses - the audio archives and study notes are located on the right of our blog. We discussed today some practical tips on how to be sure we are staying focused on God's beauty as well as modesty. Modesty is a difficult thing to teach to our daughters or other young women we have influence over, yet it is such an important principle to teach. We believe that the biblical principles we gave concerning beauty will help as well when discussing modesty with your daughter, granddaughter or other woman you are encouraging. Outward Beauty

Our last topic for discussion under the section of "desires of the eyes" in 1 John 2:16 is outward beauty. There are many principles in Scripture regarding beauty and what is beautiful in God's sight. We asked a question today - is there a Scripture verse that tells us what to physically wear? We couldn't find any, but we know that Scripture tells us to "wear" godly qualities. We hope that through the next couple of days that we can give you some good biblical principles to help you think biblically about your outward beauty.

Discontentment, continued...

We pray that the verses we have shared concerning this topic has helped you to think biblically about contentment. If you missed any of the references we shared, you can download the free study notes from the right of this blog. Use these notes as a guide to help you follow along in our discussion or simply to have the verses and questions we ask about our study. We hope that these notes and this blog are tools that you can use to help you in your quest to know God and His Word more. We mentioned some practical helps to identify areas of discontentment today on the program. Our contentment truly comes from God alone. So ask yourself - do you get upset when you don't get what you want? True contentment comes from a right standing with God. Are you in His Word and is pleasing God your greatest desire? Contentment is a mindset and we must purpose to be content with what we have. When you pray, do you say "I want" or do you pray "if the Lord wills"? These are all tough questions to ask, but we hope that you will ask yourself these questions to see if you are truly being content. Do you have any other practical questions or thoughts we could consider about this topic?

Discontentment

The second example we are using under our discussion of "desires of the eyes" in 1 John 2:16 is Discontentment. As we begin this study, please pray that God would help you see any area in your life where you are discontent. If we were truly honest with ourselves, I think we would find that we are discontent in at least one area of our life. Today we played the "if only" game. We mentioned things that we had thought of ourselves or have heard. For example "if only I had more money, I could ...." Sometimes we think that "if only" we had something that would bring us joy. If YOU played the "if only" game yourself, what would be on your list? We need to remember that our true joy comes through knowing and believing in Christ. In the days ahead we will be sharing more thoughts on how to be content.

Raising Children, continued...

As we complete our discussion on raising children, we see that we need to love our children with a "tender" love. We have to admit, we do love our children, but we do not always show our children tender love. In Titus 2:4, it tells us that the older women are to teach the younger women to "love their children." The love in this passage means a tender, affectionate, warm and caring love. Our kind words and tender affectionate actions towards our children go a long way to show our children we love them. Finally, we see that the ultimate goal of our raising children is that they might receive and accept the gospel. That is our focus! Our love, discipline and example to them ought to be so that we can share Christ with them - that they may be saved. What a calling we have! We challenge you to remember these truths as you seek to raise your children to honor the Lord. Remember that what God has called you to do, He will equip you to fulfill. Seek the Truth from God's Word and be confident in Him alone.

Raising Children, continued...

As we further explain Carolyn Mahaney's job description of a mother, we see that a mother is to provide an authentic example to her children. This means that when I sin against my child, then I must follow the biblical steps of repentance and confession. I must ask my child to forgive me for sinning against them. This teaches them that I am not perfect! An authentic example is not a "perfect" example, but rather an example that doesn't teach hypocrisy! In our biblical training of our children, we see that training and discipline must take place. Teach your children the Bible from a very young age and remind them of the truths of God's Word whenever you can (Deut. 6:6-7). Discipline is also involved in this training process. We shared some verses today regarding biblical discipline and want to encourage you to seek God's way in this. A resource that has been a benefit to us is Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Trip. Raising Children

As we look to be specific in our study of 1 John 2:16, the study of raising our children is one that we have chosen. Because the eyes are a gateway into the mind, then what we read or observe from others in this area affect what we think, what we believe and what we do. There are many secular views of "how to" raise children, and we want to challenge you to search out what God's will is regarding this area. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, godparent, or have any influence over children at church - you can take these biblical principles and apply them to your situation. I appreciated what Carolyn Mahaney had to say regarding a biblical view of motherhood. What follows in our discussion over the next several days has been taken from her thoughts. Carolyn Mahaney gives this biblical "job description" of a mother. "As a mother, I am called by God to provide for my children an authentic example and biblical training with a tender love, so they might receive and accept the gospel." As we discuss this topic of raising children, we will break down the parts of her job description. First, a mother is called by God. It was God's idea in the first place. This gives encouragement to us as mothers (or grandmothers, godmothers, teachers, etc...) that what God has called us to do, He will equip us to fulfill! Children are a blessing from the Lord (Psalm 127:3), and yet sometimes as parents we do not see them as blessings. Sometimes we are overwhelmed with the demands of motherhood that we do not remember to see our children as blessings. But God's Word reminds us that our children are blessings! Take to heart the truth that God will give you strength to fulfill your calling as 2 Corinthians 12:9 so clearly shares - "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

Desires of the Eyes

1 John 2:16 goes on to say that the "desires of the eyes" are also from the world. Again in this discussion, we want to give three specific examples as they pertain to women. They are 1) Raising Children, 2) Discontentment and 3) Physical Beauty. What does the "desires of the eyes" mean in this verse? The eyes are the gateway into the mind. What we see affects what we think. Some biblical examples are Achan who saw the spoil he wasn't allowed to take, but took it anyway (Josh. 7); David, who saw Bathsheba and took her for his own and committed sin in the process (2 Sam. 11) and Eve who saw the tree was good for fruit and listened to Satan rather than God and ate of the forbidden fruit (Gen. 3:6). It is good that we evaluate what we see by the lens of Scripture. If it doesn't match up to God's holy standard, then we must discard it and not fall prey to Satan's temptations.

Laziness

Laziness is defined in Scripture as indolent (love of ease), slothful, sluggish, not easily aroused to activity and an unwillingness to work. If you think about it too, laziness and selfishness are closely connected. Often because I'm selfish, I'm too lazy to take care of my responsibilities. We shared many verses about laziness - what are some others? As you evaluate this in your own life, are there areas where you could be more diligent with the right motivation?

Sexual Immorality, continued...

If you have sinned in this area, we want to offer you the hope that is found in Scripture. We studied in length 1 John 1:9 the promise of God's forgiveness. If you have sinned in this area and have not sought the Lord's forgiveness, do so! He promises to forgive! Recognize your sin, repent and confess and God will truly forgive. If you have been hurt by one who has committed this sin, Scripture gives us hope in Isaiah 41:10 - He will be with you, He will strengthen you, He will help you and uphold you! Be careful to take heed the warning in Hebrews 12:15 as well to not become bitter, but take the grace of God! Many have fallen into this sin and many have been hurt because of sexual immorality. Many need help to see the truth of God's Word. How can you encourage others in this area?

Sexual Immorality, continued...

How can we stop wrong thinking so that it goes on no further? This is a tough question and yet through the hope we find in God's Word we can see that we can be in control of our thought life. Yes, even our thoughts regarding those of the opposite sex can be sinful and God says in Matthew 5:27-29 - even thinking immoral thoughts is just as sinful as actually practicing the sin. It is important we control our thoughts. Philippians 4:8 is a good reminder of the things we ought to be thinking on. A favorite verse we share often is 2 Corinthians 10:5 - to take EVERY thought captive. Yes, it's possible to do this, but it takes work. Are you willing to work hard to remain pure?

Sexual Immorality

As we begin this discussion today, we want to remind you that sex was designed by God and is a beautiful thing in the context of marriage (Gen. 2:24). We do not have to sin in this area and yet many have perverted this gift that God has given. Once again, we are blessed to see that God's Word has much to say regarding even this and we need to pay attention to God's Word. All Christian women need to take heed to to the warnings and guidelines God gives. It is our prayer that through this study you will be challenged even more to live a pure life and to give you hope if you have sinned in this area.

Slander/Gossip continued...

We know that slander and gossip come from the heart (Matthew 15:19), so what is the solution? We need to 1) Follow the example of Christ (1 Peter 2:22-23), 2) Speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15), 3) Edify others (Eph. 4:29) and 4) Have a soft answer in conflict (Prov. 15:1). What are some practical guidelines to help against slander and gossip? We shared some today, but would like to hear from you.

Slander/Gossip

Slander and gossip are two words which can give us the "shivers" as we know the destructiveness of them! The word for slander is the same word that is used to describe Satan who is the "father of lies" (John 8:44). To slander is to side with Satan to oppose the cause of God! Scripture tells us that God hates a lying tongue (Prov. 6:16,19), that false teachers and the unsaved are slanderers (1 Tim. 6:3-4, Rom. 1:28-30) and that we are commanded to keep our lips from evil (Psalm 34:13). We know the truth, but why do we have such a problem with slander and gossip? Why is it that our tongue gets us into so much trouble in this area?

Anger

The blessing of God's Word is that it has much to say regarding the desires of the flesh. We are so thankful for all God has given to us - that He doesn't leave us hanging as to how to live a godly life. In Scripture we find His answers to our sinful behavior. Praise God! We hope that through sharing of verses that you will see that answers are found in His Word and that you will take advantage of seeking these answers out. Again, Scripture has much to say about anger. We've shared many verses regarding this - do you have any to add? Ask yourself - what is your trigger to anger and how can you prepare your mind to avoid getting angry?

Jealousy

Second on our list of "desires of the flesh" is jealousy. Again, Scripture has much to say regarding this topic. We know that there are always more verses we could share and so we hope that you will dive into Scripture to find out more for yourself. The jealousy we are discussing is the sinful jealousy that our fallen sinful nature has. There are many consequences for jealousy. How do we combat jealousy? What are some practical guidelines?

Gluttony, continued...

As we wrap up the topic of gluttony today we discussed some practical guidelines of ways to help ourselves and others stay in control. These included: 1) Being accountable to someone, 2) Purchase healthy items, 3) Get rid of junk food if you cannot exercise self-control, 4) Keeping a journal, 5) Watching portion sizes, especially at restaurants, 6) Setting Captives Free - http://www.settingcaptivesfree.com/. Gluttony

As we dive into the topic of gluttony we see that Scripture has much to say regarding this topic. We know that the wicked are addicted to it (Phil. 3:19), it is forbidden (Prov. 23:1-3), it leads to poverty and destruction (Prov. 23:19-21). We give many excuses for gluttony and we must see that our solution to this problem is the Biblical way. We need to keep the right perspective (1 Cor. 10:31 and exercise control (Prov. 25:16, Gal. 5:22-26). We shared many verses regarding this topic. What are some others that have helped you to think biblically regarding this topic?

Getting Specific

As we study the "desires of the flesh" in 1 John 2:16, we would like to give some specific examples of these desires as they pertain to women. Over the next couple of weeks we will be looking at 6 different desires: Gluttony, Jealousy, Anger, Slander/Gossip, Sexual Immorality, and Laziness. It is our desire to look into each of these topics to gather a biblical view of them as well as give hope on how we can avoid each of these. Please study along with us. Biblical Thinking

Here is the "Biblical Thought Process for Dealing with the Flesh" that we gave today on the program. If you wish to print this - you can find a copy of this list in our online study guide located on the right of the blog. We hope that this tool will help you as you strive to think biblically. 1. Ephesians 2:3 – What is controlling me? Passions of flesh or Christ? 2. Galatians 5:16 – Am I walking by the Spirit? 3. Romans 7:18 – Who am I depending on? Myself or Christ? 4. Romans 13:14 – Make no provision for the flesh. 5. Galatians 5:17 – Whose side am I on? The flesh or Spirit? 6. Galatians 5:24 – Do I die to fleshly desires? Do I have a plan? 7. 1 John 2:16 – Do my choices reflect God or the world?

Do Not Love the World

As we dive into 1 John chapter 2, verses 15-17, we ask ourselves the question, What does it mean to love the world and the things of the world? We shared how the word "world" in this passage refers to "Satan's system for opposing the work of Christ on earth." It is loving and being involved in non-biblical pleasures and philosophies as it regards to marriage, raising children, material possessions, obedience to the laws of the land, etc... We are reminded in Acts 5:29 that we ought to obey God rather than men. Romans 12:2 then tells us to not be conformed to the world, but be transformed. As we dive into some specific examples over the next several weeks, we pray that you will be challenged by the truth of Scripture to think biblically in all areas of life.

Growing in the Lord...

We introduced the "fathers" today in our study. These are mature believers who have intimate knowledge of God and because they know God, they know the dangers of the world. These are "spiritual saints" in our life and are ones that the "young men" and "children" can go to in time of need. As mature believers, they still have room to learn and ought to not be boastful about their knowledge but be humble to continue to strive and learn. These mature believers also should invest their lives into those who are younger than them. As you seek to apply these truths to your life, ask yourself: Am I investing my life in a younger believer? Am I seeking out a more mature believer who could help me grow more like Christ?

Spiritual Growth in New Believers

As new believers are discipled, we need to understand that there may be struggles in their new walk with Christ. What are some of these struggles? Some that we talked about are doubting of salvation, putting off old habits and putting on the new, understanding Scripture and the will of God, taking criticism from others, dealing with suffering and learning discernment. If you are a new believer, we want to encourage you to seek out another older believer to help you find from Scripture the answer to these struggles. If you are an older believer, please take advantage of opportunities to train new believers. Don't just assume that they will grow with out help. Spiritual Growth

As we look to the next section of 1 John 2:12-14 we can see a picture of spiritual growth: "little children," "young men," and "fathers." This section of Scripture helps us to see that regardless of where we are at in our spiritual growth that we can take encouragement and challenges from Scripture. We have a goal to shoot for in our spiritual growth - maturity in Christ. In our churches, we have members of our body that are in different stages of their spiritual life. The older can always be teaching the younger and every Christian, regardless of their stage can learn more about Christ to be conformed to Him. Begin thinking through the term "little children" as we discuss the message to them over the next few days.

Loving Others

1 John 2:7-11 is a section of Scripture that helps us to understand the importance of loving others. We are asking YOU - What do you find to be a barrier to loving others and what Scripture can you use to combat those barriers? Sometimes loving others doesn't come easy and so it is important to understand what might be hindering you from loving others. We would love to hear from you.
