The Tongue
James 3:8-10 says "but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so." (ESV) We talked today about how to control our tongue; to avoid slander. Why is it so hard to avoid gossip? How can I avoid gossip?

Women do tend to be "talebearers"; it just seems to be something we are predisposed to do. I think women generally gossip because it makes them feel better about their own shortcomings.
One of my favorite verses about the tongue is in Psalms 39:1 "I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me."
I wish I always had a bridle on my tongue!
What a great verse and an excellent word picture - I need a bridle too! Come to think of it, if I can choose to think Biblical truth before I speak that can work as my bridle.
Our children had a Sunday School teacher who taught her class to keep the "3 soilders" guarding ther lips. Words had to pass these three soilders before they could come out of the mouth. The soilders are Is it Kind? Is it True? Is it nessecary?
